Hirani moves from Phalke biopic to 3 Idiots sequel
A new report claims filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan are turning their attention back to their 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots after stepping away from the planned Dadasaheb Phalke biopic. The pair had been working with writer Abhijat Joshi on the biopic’s script, but the report states they were not fully convinced by the draft, leading them to pause the project.
Hirani has now reportedly finalized the script for 3 Idiots 2, bringing back the core cast, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi. The sequel is said to pick up 15 years after the events of the original film’s ending.
Story set years after the group’s final reunion
The first film ends with Kareena Kapoor’s Pia, Madhavan’s Farhan, and Sharman Joshi’s Raju tracking down Aamir’s Rancho, now revealed as Phunshukh Wangdu, at a school in Ladakh. The sequel follows where their lives have taken them since going their separate ways.
The report adds that it is still unclear whether other key characters, including Omi Vaidya’s Chatur, Boman Irani’s Virus, Mona Singh’s Mona, or Javed Jaffrey’s Ranchhoddas, will return.
The original film was co-written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and produced under Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s banner Vinod Chopra Films.
