THE Pakistan National Information Technology Board (NITB), which works for digital empowerment of the common people of the country, has warned about a possible shutdown of mobile and internet services across the nation amid severe power outages.
In a tweet, the NITB said, “Telecom operators in Pakistan have warned about shutting down mobile and internet services due to long hours of power outages nationwide, as the interruption is causing issues and hindrance in their operations.”
Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, who took over just a few months ago, also cautioned that the South Asian country might face increased power outages in July, Geo News reported.
“Pakistan could not get the required liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, however, the coalition government was trying to make the deal possible,” he said.
Pakistan, which is coping with financial challenges, has also been facing a severe power crisis after failing to agree on a deal for national gas supply.
According to Geo News which cited data, Pakistan is struggling to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) for generating power amid a heatwave which is causing a high demand.
The government in Islamabad has even slashed working hours for public servants and asked shopping malls and factories in various cities, including Karachi, to close down early in order to save energy.
“The government is speaking to Qatar about a new five or 10-year LNG supply deal for three monthly cargoes, as well as an additional cargo under an existing deal,” Pakistan finance minister Miftah Ismail was quoted as saying.
Inflation in Pakistan has entered the double digit, the biggest rise in almost six years.
