JASPRIT Bumrah, the ace India seamer who is captaining his country in the ongoing fifth Test against England at Edgbaston, came to the party with the bat on Day 2 to help his side reach a commanding 400-plus total in the first innings.
Bumrah slammed 31 runs coming at No.10 and he took just 16 balls to score those runs, thanks to some explosive batting against veteran seamer Stuart Broad. India exploited 35 runs off Broad’s last over of the innings as the India skipper went berserk on his captaincy debut. Off the 35 runs, 29 came from Bumrah’s bat.

The feat eclipsed former West Indies captain Brian Lara’s record of taking 28 runs off an over of South Africa bowler Robin Peterson in 2003. Australia’s George Bailey and South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj also have records of hitting 28 runs in an over in the long format. Broad’s over also happened to be the most expensive in Test cricket. The six deliveries that Broad bowled went for the following runs: four, four off wide ball, six off no ball, four, four, four, six and one.
However, Bumrah’s batting made the Indian fans nostalgic as it was the same Broad who was belted mercilessly by another former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh in a crucial game in the 2007 World Twenty20. In that game, Singh had thrashed Broad for 36 runs in one over, thanks to six sixes, after he had a verbal exchange with Andrew Flintoff. India went on to win that game by 18 runs and it was a giant step towards winning the title that year.
