WHILE Boris Johnson continued to be at the centre of all debate and discussion as he resigned as the British prime minister on Thursday (7), speculation is also rife over the future of his former chancellor of exchequer Rishi Sunak whose resignation along with health secretary Sajid Javid caused the eruption that eventually led to Johnson’s resignation. On Wednesday (6), Sunak’s family was in the headlines after his wife Akshata served journalists tea.

Sunak has maintained a low profile since his exit which set off the current political crisis in the British government. According to the UK’s ITV News, the 42-year-old has not been seen since he left 11 Downing Street, the official residence of the chancellor, on Tuesday (5).

Journalists kept waiting outside Sunak’s family home in London but instead of the former chancellor, they got to see Murthy who arrived with a tray carrying tea and biscuits.

Murthy, the daughter of billionaire Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, was seen placing the tray on a makeshift table before briskly heading back home. The footage was shared by ITV News on Twitter.

While it was a candid gesture on part of Murthy, not all netizens were impressed.

They zeroed in on the Emma Lacey mugs (each cost 38) that Murthy brought with her to serve tea and some called it a tone-deaf move at a time when the UK is struggling with a cost-of-living crisis. Other social media users called her “out of touch” and that her act was nothing but “Blatant photo op”.
