Here are some news in brief related to India’s politics for Wednesday, August 3, 2022:
The opposition Indian National Congress slammed the Narendra Modi government saying the party was “under siege” by the government which, it said, surrounded its headquarters and the residences of party chief Sonia Gandhi and former president Rahul Gandhi as if they were “terrorists”. Addressing a hurriedly-convened press conference at the party office in the evening after roads leading to its headquarters were barricaded and police deployed nearby, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Ajay Maken and Abhishek Singhvi said it will not be intimidated by this kind of “cheap and petty politics” and will continue to raise people’s issues. This came soon after the ED temporarily sealed the premises of Young Indian (YI) in the Congress-owned National Herald office in Delhi.
Vigilance commissioner Suresh N Patel was on Wednesday appointed as the Central Vigilance Commissioner, a year after the post fell vacant. Patel, who has been working as the acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) since June this year, was sworn in as the chief of the probity watchdog Central Vigilance Commission by president Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Wednesday announced support to National Democratic Alliance’s vice presidential candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar. She said she did it in “view of larger public interest”. In a tweet, Mayawati, one of the top leaders of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, said, “It is a well-known fact that the lack of consensus between the ruling and the opposition parties led to the election to the post of President, the country’s highest post. Now, similar situation is emerging for the post of Vice-President, the election to which is due to take place on August 6.”
Several Indian MPs, including central ministers and young parliamentarians, on Wednesday took part in a Tricolour bike rally in Delhi that originated from the historic Red Fort to pay tribute to the freedom fighters as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, a government initiative to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence.
Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for dividing people and spreading hatred in the southern state of Karnataka. He said this at the event of the 75th birthday celebrations of Congress leader and former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah at Davangere. “I don’t usually attend birthday celebrations. I have come here because I share a special bond with Siddaramaiah. Not only do I like him as a person, but I also share his views. I share his compassion for the poor and the weak,” he said.
Indian singer-turned politician Babul Supriyo, who crossed over from the BJP to the Trinamool Congress in 2021, was among nine leaders sworn in as ministers in the Mamata Banerjee-led government of West Bengal on Wednesday. Supriyo was previously a member of the Narendra Modi government in New Delhi. He later quit the party after failing to find a ministry last year.
