In-form Indian batter Shubman Gill on Friday (26) belted his third century in four matches in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Gujarat Titans against Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to power his side to a mammoth 233 for 3 in 20 overs. They later won the match by 62 runs as Mumbai were bowled out for 171 in the penultimate over with Suryakumar Yadav top scoring with 61 in 38 balls.

After Mumbai won the toss and asked the home team to bat first, Gill resumed from where he left in the previous match against Royal Challengers Bangalore and slammed a century, his second successive and third overall in the tournament. Only former India captain Virat Kohli has hit three or more centuries in a single edition of the IPL.

The 23-year-old Gill, who is considered the next big thing in Indian cricket, slammed 129 off just 60 balls with the help of seven fours and 10 sixes and finished with a strike rate of 215 to lay the foundation for Gujarat to post a big total.

Gill also became the fourth batter overall to cross 800 runs in a single IPL season, trailing Kohli (2016 season), Jos Buttler (2022) and David Warner (2016).

Last week, the batter had scored two consecutive hundreds against Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad to become the fourth batter after Shikhar Dhawan, Buttler and Kohli to register successive tons in the IPL.

Overall in T20s, only Kohli, Rohit Sharma (six) and KL Rahul (six) have scored more hundreds than Gill’s five tons so far.

Gujarat will take on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in the final at the same ground on Sunday (28). They had lost against the same team in the first qualifier on Tuesday (23).
