Odisha train crash: Twitter applaud as people queue up at local hospital to donate blood for injured

These people queued up to donate their blood. Nobody checked what the religion of the injured is. At the end of the day, this is who we are, said one Twitter user.

People came out to express solidarity, not only with words but also action, after a three-train collision killed nearly 300 people and injured several hundreds more in Balasore in the eastern Indian state of Odisha on Friday (2) night.

According to reports, people queued up in large numbers at a hospital in Balasore where the injured were undergoing treatment to donate blood.

Odisha’s chief secretary Pradeep Jena said people were voluntarily coming to donate blood and he was getting a high number of requests. He also thanked the local people for coming to the aid of the rescue professionals since the accident took place around 7.30 pm local time on Friday, leaving the site in a massive mess with coaches piling up.

“People are coming voluntarily to donate blood. I am getting requests from many places so it is a good sign. Since the accident till now, the local people have been providing a lot of assistance to our rescue professionals,” the official was quoted as saying by Asian News International.

The post shared by ANI about people coming forward to donate blood has been receiving a lot of positive reactions and people applauded their initiatives.

On social media, an user wrote, “This is the reason why India is one of the greatest nations to live. The Culture, Ethics and Helpful Nature of Indians in Blood. Proud for all of you who are waiting in queue to donate their blood…” Another user while praising humanity wrote, “Hat’s off to them…when humanity rises that’s the light of hope in the darkness…”

Another user wrote, “❤️ Incredibly proud of the people of #Balasore for their selflessness and compassion in the face of tragedy. Seeing the long queues of blood donors after the devastating train accident warms my heart. Your act of donating blood will save lives and bring hope to those in need. 🩸”

Another said, “These people queued up to donate their blood. Nobody checked what the religion of the injured is. At the end of the day, this is who we are. It’s not the politicians &media who spew venom on a daily basis to make extra money, get more power. It’s people who care for other people.”

Meanwhile, Indian railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who paid a visit to the accident site, called the accident a “big tragic” one and that various quarters, including the railways and the Odisha government, were conducting the rescue operation. He said compensation has already been announced and a high-level committee has been set up to probe the accident.
