According to cops, the accident took place when a tyre of the one of the two buses burst, resulting in its driver losing control of the vehicle and going to the ride side of the road, hitting another bus.

FIVE PEOPLE were killed and at least 80 were injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Cuddalore district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Monday (19). Both the vehicles were damaged badly and the local people and police personnel rushed to the rescue of the injured and sent them to the hospital.
R Rajaram, a senior police officer in Cuddalore, told NDTV that the accident happened when one of the tyres of the two buses burst. The driver lost control of the vehicle which veered to the right side of the road and rammed into another bus which was coming from the opposite direction.

Drivers of both the buses were killed in the crash. While one bus was travelling to Tiruvannamalai, the other was coming from Panruti.
Those who were critically injured were shifted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Research in Puducherry.
Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin condoled the deaths and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 for those critically injured and Rs 25,000 for those having minor injuries. He deputed two ministers to ensure that the injured people received proper treatment.
