IN a shocking video which was doing rounds on social media, a man was found urinating on a tribal labourer in Sidhi district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The incident caused much outrage and even the chief minister of the state, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, took cognizance of the video and called for the National Security Act to be slapped against the accused.

It was reported that the labourer belongs to the Pale Kol tribe and is a resident of Sidhi.

In a tweet, Chouhan wrote, “A viral video of Sidhi district has come to my notice… I have instructed the administration to arrest the culprit and take strict action and also impose NSA.”

According to India Today, the labourer was terrified to lodge a complaint. The video is almost a week old and was recovered by the police only on Tuesday (4).

The accused, who was smoking at the time of peeing, was identified as Pravesh Shukla and the local police in Sidhi filed a first information report against him under sections 294 (obscene act in public place) and 504 (intentional insult) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled tribe Act.

The opposition Indian National Congress also slammed the act in the video. Former chief minister Kamal Nath said in a tweet that there was no place for such heinous acts in a civilised society. He said atrocities against tribals in Madhya Pradesh should end.

Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress President and tribal leader Vikrant Bhuria called the incident “shameful”.

The controversy erupted just a few days after prime minister Narendra Modi visited a village in Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh and interacted with the tribal leaders and people.

Madhya Pradesh will go to polls later this year.
