A HUGE protest took place on Saturday (11) outside a police station in Dausa district of the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan after a four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a policeman, who was beaten up by local villagers who turned up in large numbers to condemn the incident.

It was reported that the accused, identified as Bhupendra Singh, allegedly lured the minor into his room on Friday (10) afternoon and committed the crime. The girl is currently undergoing treatment in a state hospital. Singh, who was on election duty as the state is set to go to polls on November 25, was arrested and is being investigated, police sources said.

Assistant superintendent of police Bajrang Singh said a case was registered against the accused based on the complaint filed by a family living nearby. He said the girl was undergoing a medical examination and necessary action would be taken soon.

Angry villagers gathered around the police station where the complaint was filed, shouting slogans against the police. They also beat up Bhupendra Singh before he was handed over to the law-keepers.

Rajasthan is ruled by the Indian National Congress, which is in opposition at the federal government, and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of prime minister Narendra Modi is desperate to win it back ahead of next year’s general elections.

Kirodi Mal Meena, a BJP parliamentarian from Dausa, visited the spot and said people were angry and that he wanted to get justice for the victim.

He also announced a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the victim’s family.

The BJP has criticised Rajasthan’s Ashok Gehlot government over rising incidents of rape in Rajasthan.
