Actor Kunal Kapoor has described Ramayana, the upcoming mythological epic directed by Nitesh Tiwari and starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, as a cinematic spectacle unlike anything Indian audiences have ever seen. Speaking in an interview with News18, Kunal, who is reportedly playing the role of Lord Indra in the film, emphasized the massive scale and cultural importance of the project.
Kapoor said, “This is a very important film in our cultural history. It’s a really important part of our cultural ethos. I think it’s important that we have filmmakers and teams who can give it the kind of scale it needs. This is mounted at a scale that we’ve never seen before.” His words echo the growing buzz around the film, which has already received early praise from political dignitaries, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Ramayana features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and South superstar Yash as Ravana. The ensemble cast includes notable names such as Lara Dutta, Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, Sheeba Chaddha, and veteran actor Arun Govil, best known for his portrayal of Ram in the 1987 TV series. The film will be released in two parts—Part 1 is scheduled to arrive in theatres during Diwali 2026, with Part 2 following in 2027.
Kapoor also remarked on the uniqueness of the production. “It is going to be something very special that deserves the kind of film this story should have. I’m very excited about it. I think the audience is going to be surprised by what they see. It is going to be a spectacle on a scale that nobody has seen before,” he added.
Supporting these sentiments, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis had earlier praised the film during a discussion with producer Namit Malhotra at the Waves Summit 2025. Recalling his visit to the film’s presentation pavilion, Fadnavis said, “I think, as you rightly said, we are the world’s oldest storytellers. Our art, drama, and music are very old, and we only wanted to couple them with the latest technology — and I think that’s what you are doing. So, yesterday, when I visited your pavilion with the Prime Minister, I was amazed to see the quality of Ramayana that you are creating. I think this is the way we need to tell our stories to the new generation.”
With heavyweights like Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi taking on iconic roles from Indian mythology, and with Nitesh Tiwari at the helm, Ramayana is shaping up to be a landmark moment for Indian cinema. The film promises to blend traditional storytelling with cutting-edge VFX and scale, setting new benchmarks in mythological filmmaking. Audiences can expect a breathtaking cinematic experience rooted in timeless cultural heritage.
