Reports suggested that the Bollywood star was in talks to portray the legendary actress, with some sources even claiming that Kiara was impressed with the script and might make this her comeback project after her pregnancy.

Filmmaker Siddharth P Malhotra Responds
However, Siddharth P Malhotra—the filmmaker who holds the rights to Meena Kumari’s life story—has stepped in to clarify the situation. Taking to Instagram, Malhotra addressed the swirling rumors and urged both media and fans to refrain from making assumptions about the film’s casting.
“Would appreciate for the media to avoid conjectures on the casting of Kamal aur Meena. The script has only gotten ready and as we have a cast and more, we will only be more than happy to officially announce it,” he wrote. Malhotra emphasized that any official news about the cast will be shared directly by the team, and until then, speculation should be avoided.
Project Details: A Love Story for the Ages
The biopic, tentatively titled Kamal aur Meena, was announced last year by Saregama in collaboration with Bilal Amrohi and other partners. The film is set to chronicle the intense and often turbulent love story between Meena Kumari and her producer-husband Kamal Amrohi.
The narrative will trace their 20-year journey, starting from their first meeting when Meena was just 18 and Kamal was 34, through to the making and release of the iconic film Pakeezah. The creative team reportedly includes celebrated names such as AR Rahman, Irshad Kamil, Bhavani Iyer, and Kausar Munir, raising expectations for a project rich in music and storytelling.

Meena Kumari, born Mahjabeen Bano, remains one of the most revered actresses in the history of Hindi cinema. Known for her poignant performances and tragic personal life, she starred in a string of classics including Baiju Bawra (1952), Parineeta (1953), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Kaajal (1965), Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Mere Apne (1971), and the timeless Pakeezah (1972).
Her marriage to Kamal Amrohi was a significant chapter in both their lives, marked by passion, creativity, and heartbreak. Meena Kumari passed away just weeks after the release of “Pakeezah,” at the age of 38, cementing her legacy as a true icon of Indian cinema.
