Sequel plans take shape
More than 15 years after 3 Idiots reshapes mainstream Hindi cinema, Aamir Khan and director Rajkumar Hirani are set to collaborate again for a sequel. Reports say the script is now locked, with the makers aiming to take the film into production in 2026.
The project brings back one of Bollywood’s most successful creative partnerships, raising expectations of a story that builds on the original while moving the characters forward.
‘4 idiots’ as a working title
According to a report by Pinkvilla, the sequel is currently being developed under the tentative title 4 Idiots. While the name is not final, the team is said to be exploring the idea of adding a fourth central character to expand the franchise.
The makers are reportedly searching for a major star to join the existing trio. The writing focuses on continuing the narrative from where the first film ends, while introducing new elements to justify the addition of another lead.
Original cast expected to return
The sequel is expected to reunite Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan in their original roles from the 2009 hit. The possibility of a new “fourth idiot” has become a major talking point, with fans eager to see how the dynamic evolves.
Although 4 Idiots is only a placeholder title, it signals a clear intent to build on the legacy of the original film rather than simply revisiting it.
A landmark film revisited
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots earns cult status and wide critical acclaim. It becomes the first Indian film to cross the $25 million mark at the domestic box office, setting new benchmarks for commercial success.
The sequel is set to be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with Vidhu Vinod Chopra associated with the project, and produced by Aamir Khan, continuing the creative team behind the original blockbuster.
