Allegations outlined in court filing

Sangeetha Vijay, wife of actor-turned-politician Vijay, has approached the Chengalpattu Family Court seeking dissolution of their marriage under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

The petition states that their marriage was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, followed by a ceremonial wedding in Chennai on August 25, 1999.

In her plea, Sangeetha alleges that since April 2021 Vijay has been involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. She says the situation caused emotional distress, mental suffering, and a breach of marital trust. The filing claims that although Vijay initially assured her the relationship would end, it continued, resulting in prolonged mental cruelty.

Claims of neglect and failed reconciliation

The petition further contends that she made repeated efforts to resolve the matter privately, including exchanges through legal counsel, but no settlement was reached. She states that attempts at reconciliation were postponed at times in consideration of their children’s education and well-being.

Sangeetha also alleges emotional, mental, and physical neglect, claiming Vijay withdrew from the relationship and distanced himself. The filing says that overseas trips and social media posts linked to the alleged relationship caused humiliation and distress to her and the children.

Relief sought and request for confidentiality

Describing the marriage as irretrievably broken, Sangeetha has sought a decree of divorce, permanent alimony aligned with Vijay’s income and status, and the right to reside in the matrimonial home or receive suitable alternate accommodation.

She has also requested that proceedings be held in camera to safeguard privacy and sought an interim injunction restraining media coverage or publication of details related to the case.

The matter is now before the family court, where further proceedings will determine the course of the dispute.
