Just days after he was disqualified as a member of the Indian parliament following his conviction by a court in the western state of Gujarat over a four-year-old remark allegedly defaming the Modi surname while targeting prime minister Narendra Modi, Indian National Congress Rahul Gandhi changed his bio on Twitter account by replacing the term “Member of Parliament” with “Dis’Qualified MP”.

“This is the official account of Rahul Gandhi | Member of the Indian National Congress | Dis’Qualified MP,” the former member of the Lok Sabha or Lower House of the parliament said.

Gandhi has been a four-term parliamentarian starting 2004 and represented the Wayanad constituency from the southern state of Kerala since 2019 after losing from his previous seat of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh where he won three successive elections.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress was holding protests across the country against the disqualification that entered the second day on Monday.

A number of opposition parties which have otherwise criticised Gandhi at other times have rallied behind him following his disqualification, accusing the Narendra Modi government of conspiring against them.

“How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname,” Gandhi had alleged remarked at an election rally in Kolara in the southern state of Karnataka in 2019 and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party pounced upon it saying it was a smear campaign against those sharing the Modi surname and the backward community.

A lawmaker from Gujarat moved the court against the Congress leader over his remark.

The court which convicted Gandhi on Thursday (23) also gave him 30 days to appeal the verdict which he is yet to do.

The Wayanad seat has now become vacant following Gandhi’s disqualification.
