August 7, 2021, announced as Asian Day in Indianapolis

JOE Hogsett, the mayor of the American city of Indianapolis, recently announced August 7, 2021, as the Asian Day and conferred the Young-Hee Yedinak Leadership Award to six youths.

The occasion saw individuals and groups from various countries presenting performances and more than 1,200 people attended the event.

Indiana governor Eric Holcomb said in the 2021 Asian Festival that efforts were undertaken to take the state to the world and bring the world back to the Hoosier State. The event was hosted by Asian American Alliance Inc (AAAI) headed by Rupal Thanawala at the Global Village Welcome Center, located at 4233 Lafayette Road in Indianapolis.

The theme for this year’s festival was “Caring the Community”.

On the occasion, Dr Virginia Caine, executive director of Marion County public health department, gave Covid-19 safety tips and explained various steps Indianapolis has taken to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mayor Hogsett said by taking precautions for the pandemic, “you will be saving your life, lives of neighbours, lives of your school going children, saving the country and the world”.

A temporary Covid-19 vaccination center was also set up at the event where free vaccines were provided and free health screening was done.

The recipients of the award are Melissa Su, Aditya Ariyur, Rahee Dharmadhikari, Prenesh Monda, Adwita Yemme and Vinay Krishnan.
