In a bizarre incident, a newly married man and his elder brother were killed while four others were injured after a home theatre music system that the family had received as a wedding gift exploded in their house.

The incident happened in Kabirdham district of the central state of Chhattisgarh on Monday (3), police said on Tuesday (4).

The impact of the explosion was so big that even walls and the roof of the room where the device was kept collapsed, the Press Trust of India cited the police as saying.

The area where the incident happened is located close to the state’s border with Madhya Pradesh and is known for disturbance by Maoist elements. It is also located around 200 kilometres from the state capital of Raipur.

Preliminary information said the newly married man who died was named Hemendra Merawi, 22. His marriage took place on Saturday (1).

On Monday, he was unwrapping the wedding gifts that he received along with other family members, the police said, adding that as Merawi switched on the home theatre system after connecting its wire to an electric board, the device exploded, killing him on the spot.

His elder brother Rajkumar, 30, and four others, including a one-and-half-year-old boy, also suffered injuries and were taken to the local district hospital where the former succumbed to his injuries.

The others were still undergoing treatment, the police added.

A forensic team went to the spot where the incident happened along with police officers and the exact cause of the explosion was yet to be known, the police added.

They also said that no other inflammable item was found in the room that could have caused the blast.
