Car-truck collision kills 10 in Gujarat

TEN members in a family were killed after their car collided with a truck on Wednesday (16) in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

The accident took place on a state highway connecting Tarapur in Anand district to Vataman in Ahmedabad district, a Tarapur police station official said.

‘The car in which 10 persons, including a child, were travelling, was hit by the speeding truck. All the 10 occupants of the car were killed on the spot,’ he said.

The car was going towards Vataman, while the truck was coming from the opposite side, he said.

Prime minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the accident, and announced that an ex-gratia of Rs 200,00 each to the next of kin of the deceased.

“Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Anand district in Gujarat. Condolences to those who lost their near and dear ones,” Modi tweeted.

Apart from the two children, who were in the age group of three to five years, two women also died in the accident, local media reported

Efforts were on to get the bodies out of the mangled remains of the car and identify the deceased, officials said.
