Controversial comments shared online
Gretchen Felker Martin, a novelist and DC Comics writer, came under fire after screenshots of posts from her Bluesky account surfaced following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The messages included profanity and remarks interpreted by many as mocking or trivialising the shooting.
Reaction from the public
The comments quickly spread on social media and prompted calls for DC Comics to cut ties with the writer. Some industry figures, including artists, said her views were incompatible with professional standards. Many critics said the remarks appeared to condone hostility and violence.
DC Comics cancels titles
DC Comics responded by cancelling existing retailer orders for Red Hood issues two and three, as well as all future instalments of the series. Retailers were told they would be credited for copies of issue one, including those already sold.
The publisher issued a statement saying that while it values individual expression of viewpoints, posts or comments that could be seen as promoting hostility or violence are not consistent with its standards of conduct.
Martin’s response
Felker Martin has not commented publicly since the controversy escalated. She is best known as the author of the horror novel Manhunt and had recently been working on the Red Hood series for DC Comics.
