Deborra-Lee Furness finally broke her silence following the official finalization of her divorce from Hugh Jackman, her husband of nearly three decades. The 69-year-old Australian actress and philanthropist opened up about the emotional toll of their separation, describing it as a journey through “betrayal” and personal transformation.
In a heartfelt statement to the Daily Mail on May 27, Furness said, “My heart and compassion go out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal. It’s a profound wound that cuts deep.” Her comments mark the first time she has publicly spoken since filing for divorce in late 2023.
Furness and Jackman, now 56, were married in 1996 and spent 27 years together before confirming their amicable separation in September 2023. They share two children, Oscar and Ava. While their divorce remains uncontested, its emotional impact has been significant.
Despite the pain, Furness said she has found solace in spirituality, adding, “I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working FOR us. This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage.”
The producer and former journalist emphasized that she has emerged stronger, having gained “much knowledge and wisdom” from the experience. “Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose,” she said. “It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries is liberation and freedom.”
Furness also reflected on the meaning of relationships and life lessons. “The one thing I’ve learned is that none of this is personal. We are all on our individual journeys,” she explained. “We invite people into our lives to learn lessons and heal broken parts of ourselves. I remain grateful.”
Her statement comes as Jackman continues to make headlines for his rumored romance with Broadway star Sutton Foster. The pair were photographed holding hands during a January outing in Santa Monica, just months after Foster filed for divorce from screenwriter Ted Griffin in October 2024. The duo previously starred together in The Music Man on Broadway, with Foster describing Jackman as “one of the greatest guys ever” in past interviews.
While Jackman has remained tight-lipped about the split and his alleged relationship, the public response to Furness’ statement has been one of admiration for her strength and resilience.
In their joint separation announcement shared with PEOPLE last year, the former couple stated: “Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
As Furness continues her healing journey and embraces newfound freedom, fans are praising her for speaking her truth and offering compassion to others facing similar heartbreak.
