Dubai airport resumes operation after bad weather hits once again

Memories of waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall last month were back to haunt the people of the desert city this week as heavy downpour affected flight operations once again.

FLIGHTS operating from Dubai International Airport were back to normal on Thursday (2) afternoon following overnight disruptions caused by uncertain weather conditions across the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

On Thursday late evening, a spokesperson of the airport confirmed to Gulf News that the situation had returned to normal after unsettled weather caused problems overnight. The official said there was no additional cancellation or diversion of flights and all terminals were smoothly operational.

While 13 flights were cancelled on Thursday morning, five inbound flights were diverted overnight, the airport spokesperson confirmed. 

“Dubai Airports confirms that due to unsettled weather conditions, five inbound flights were diverted overnight. Additionally, nine arrivals and four outbound flights were cancelled,” he was quoted as saying by Gulf News

Flights of UAE airlines including Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia were affected.

Dubai’s flagship carrier Emirates called off flights to various destinations including Istanbul, Nairobi, Cairo, Amman, Singapore and Johannesburg.

The airline flydubai also had to delay and cancel several departures from its home case Dubai, including those to India, Pakistan, Bahrain and Iran.

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways operations were also hit. 

Sharjah-based airline Air Arabia advised passengers to commence their travel to its hubs in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah with extra time in hand.
