The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a high-priority Class I recall for tomatoes distributed in three southern states due to a potential salmonella contamination. This top-level recall—indicating a severe health risk—was announced after tomatoes packaged by Williams Farms Repack LLC, based in Lodge, South Carolina, tested positive for salmonella.

According to the FDA, the affected tomatoes were sold under the H&C Farms label between April 23 and April 28, 2025, to wholesalers and distributors. The products reached retail markets in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, prompting an urgent consumer warning.

In a May 28 update, the FDA confirmed that although no illnesses or deaths have been reported yet, the bacteria’s potential to cause life-threatening infections means immediate action is necessary. Salmonella is particularly dangerous to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

The agency clarified that while freezing and drying may slow bacterial growth, these methods do not eliminate salmonella. The bacteria can survive for weeks in dry conditions and months in moist environments.

The following products have been recalled. Consumers should check packaging for these sizes and lot numbers:

  • 5×6: Lot R4467
  • 6×6: Lots R4467 and R4470
  • Combo, 25-pound: R4467
  • 4×4 (2-layer): R4467
  • 4×5 (2-layer): R4467
  • 60-count (2-layer): R4467
  • 60-count, 18 lbs loose: R4467, R4470
  • XL, 18 lbs loose: R4467
  • 3-count trays: R4467

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, with symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps occurring within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. While most people recover without treatment, in severe cases, hospitalization may be required.

Pregnant women should also be vigilant, as salmonella infection could result in complications. If symptoms develop after consuming these tomatoes, individuals are urged to seek medical attention promptly.

The FDA advises consumers not to consume the affected tomatoes. They should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund or safely discarded. Consumers experiencing symptoms should immediately contact their healthcare provider.

This warning follows a series of recent recalls across various food categories, including cucumbers and oysters, highlighting the FDA’s increased scrutiny over foodborne illness risks in 2025.
