A new spin on a classic series

Nintendo has unveiled Fire Emblem Shadows, a mobile spinoff of its long-running strategy franchise. Unlike past titles, Shadows blends tactical role-playing elements with social deduction, setting it apart from traditional entries.

How the gameplay works

Each battle involves three allies, but one is secretly aligned with the “disciples of shadow.” Players can choose to play as a disciple of light, tasked with surviving the labyrinth, or as a shadow, aiming to mislead the group. After combat, participants vote on who they believe is the traitor. The results shape the difficulty of the next battle, making trust and deception central to progress.

Nintendo doubles down on mobile

Fire Emblem Shadows is free to download on iOS and Android, with optional purchases. It marks Nintendo’s latest push in the mobile market after the runaway success of Fire Emblem Heroes, a gacha-driven title that has generated steady revenue since 2017. Unlike Heroes, Shadows experiments with a format closer to social party games, broadening the series’ reach.

Building momentum for Switch 2

The release comes as Nintendo prepares for the launch of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave on its next-generation Switch console. By diversifying the Fire Emblem brand across platforms, the company is aiming to capture both long-time fans and new players drawn to mobile-first experiences.
