For any fan, having an opportunity to get closer to his/her sporting icon is a dream. But for Arthur Borges, it was something out of the world. A fan of former world No.1 tennis player Garbine Muguruza, he had once asked her for a selfie in New York during the US Open 2021 and as fate had it, the duo ended up getting engaged to each other.
Muguruza, who was born in Venezuela and represents Spain and has won top tournaments such as the French Open and Wimbledon, told HOLA! Spain magazine that her chance meeting with Borges happened at the Central Park and he brought the question this month. Mugiruza, 29, announced her engagement to her fan over the weekend via an Instagram post, which she captioned “You had me at ‘Hello'”.

Reflecting on their unique love story, Muguruza told the Spanish publication she had to clear her mind before the prestigious competition and went out for a walk from her hotel which was close to Central Park.
“I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome’,” the tennis player was quoted as saying by the outlet.
It was the beginning and soon the duo started spending more time together, often going for walks around Central Park.
Besides the looks, there was another reason why Muguruza got attracted towards Borges and it was the fact that he was not involved in tennis and worked in the fashion industry instead.
She also recalled the moment when he proposed to her. She said she felt weird and was thinking something else when Borges put the proposal before her.
“I started crying. I didn’t know how to react. I said ‘yes’ in the midst of tears, it was very romantic,” she was quoted as saying by the publication.
Muguruza has 10 singles and five doubles titles in her career. A player with injury issues, she took a break from tennis in the later part of last year in the middle of a poor form.
