Google Cloud has announced a sweeping new infrastructure initiative called America-India Connect, backed by a five-year, $15 billion investment designed to expand AI access, strengthen global connectivity, and prevent the widening of a digital divide in the age of artificial intelligence.
As AI technologies reshape industries and economies, reliable infrastructure has become essential. Google Cloud says the goal is to ensure that the rapid rise of AI does not create an “AI divide,” where only certain regions benefit from advanced digital tools. America-India Connect is designed to increase the reach, reliability, and resilience of digital networks spanning four continents.
A central part of the initiative is the development of a new international subsea cable gateway in Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, on India’s east coast. This move will diversify India’s connectivity beyond traditional landing points in Mumbai and Chennai. By establishing Vizag as a major digital hub, the project aims to strengthen India’s digital backbone and economic security for its population of more than one billion people.
On the East Coast, Google Cloud plans to build a direct fiber-optic route linking Vizag and Chennai to South Africa. When combined with existing subsea systems such as Equiano and Nuvem, this route will create a high-capacity corridor connecting the American East Coast around Africa to India. Another planned connection between Vizag and Singapore, integrated with systems like Bosun and Tabua, will establish a South Pacific pathway linking the American West Coast through Australia to India.
On India’s west coast, a new fiber-optic path between Mumbai and Western Australia will further expand connectivity. In combination with subsea cable systems including TalayLink and Honomoana, this route will enhance connections between the American West Coast, Australia, and Mumbai. It will also complement existing systems such as Blue, Raman, and Sol, which already form a data corridor running from the American East Coast through the Red Sea to India.
Google Cloud emphasizes that subsea cables play a crucial role in improving internet affordability, reliability, and long-term economic growth. Stronger digital infrastructure supports businesses, governments, and individuals by enabling access to cloud services, digital tools, and AI innovation.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative also includes investments in digital skills. Google Cloud is partnering with the Government of India’s Mission Karmayogi under the Karmayogi Bharat program to support the iGOT (Integrated Government Online Training) platform. As the primary cloud partner, Google Cloud provides secure and scalable infrastructure to serve more than 20 million public servants across over 800 districts.
AI tools will help digitize legacy training materials, improve content discovery, and enable learning in more than 18 Indian languages. This effort is designed to empower civil servants with accessible, AI-enabled knowledge resources, supporting professional development and more effective public service delivery.
With America-India Connect, Google Cloud aims to transform historic maritime trade routes into modern digital highways, strengthening ties between the United States, India, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that the benefits of AI are widely shared and globally accessible.
