A move toward battery-free remotes

Google has worked with Epishine to integrate indoor solar cell technology into a new reference remote design for Google TV devices. The update, first noted by 9to5Google, means manufacturers could eventually offer remotes that recharge through ambient room light instead of relying on disposable batteries.

The remote uses rechargeable cells supported by Epishine’s panels on both sides. With regular indoor exposure, it should remain powered unless it’s left in a dark spot for an extended period.

Built by Google’s long-time hardware partner

The new G32 reference remote is produced by Ohsung Electronics, an established supplier of Google’s reference designs. While companies can build their own remotes, many opt for Google’s templates to speed up development. Walmart’s Onn streaming devices, for instance, feature remotes based on Google’s earlier models.

Existing designs in the lineup include the G10 with 22 buttons and the G20 with 38 buttons. Manufacturers can tailor layouts, including shortcuts for streaming apps beyond the usual Netflix and YouTube presets.

A growing trend in remote design

Solar-powered remotes aren’t entirely new. Hama introduced a universal remote with indoor solar tech last year, and Samsung has used similar features in its TV remotes. Google’s move could, however, make the technology more accessible for smaller hardware makers building Google TV boxes and dongles.

What happens next

The G32 isn’t yet bundled with any Google TV device and isn’t available for standalone purchase. But its arrival offers a clear sign that Google is encouraging greener hardware options, potentially setting a new standard for future streaming accessories.
