  • Actor Imran Khan has finally ended years of speculation surrounding his long-awaited return to the big screen. After stepping away from acting for more than a decade, the former Bollywood heartthrob is set to reappear in Happy Patel, his directorial debut with actor-comedian Vir Das.

Although details of Imran’s involvement had remained uncertain as multiple projects circulated in the rumor mill, the film’s announcement video has now provided clarity, along with an exciting glimpse of Imran in what appears to be a cameo.

The announcement opens with a fast-paced sizzle reel featuring moments from the quirky spy film, which marks Vir Das’s first outing as a feature film director. The teaser ends with a striking 15-second snippet revealing several of Vir’s varied looks in the film, culminating in a brief yet powerful wide shot of Imran Khan.

Sporting long, rugged hair and a brooding expression, Imran’s appearance immediately sparked excitement among fans, who flooded social media with screengrabs and celebratory messages. Many were delighted to spot him, even if only for a second, and hailed the moment as the long-awaited revival of his Bollywood journey.

Imran Khan was last seen on the big screen in Katti Batti (2015), after which he quietly stepped away from films, later acknowledging that he needed time away from the pressures of the industry. His low-profile lifestyle, combined with sporadic hints about a return, created both anticipation and uncertainty. The confirmation of his cameo in Happy Patel has therefore generated a wave of nostalgia and renewed enthusiasm among longtime fans.

Reactions online have been overwhelmingly positive. One fan expressed joy over Imran choosing a fun, unconventional film rather than forcing a traditional leading-man comeback, adding that the eccentric tone of the project suits him perfectly. Another simply wrote, “Good to see he is back,” capturing the sentiment echoed by many who have been waiting for his return.

The film’s creative team has also contributed to the excitement. Happy Patel is produced by Aamir Khan, reuniting him with Imran and Vir Das more than a decade after the cult hit Delhi Belly (2011).

The connection hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans, several of whom praised the announcement video for its similar energy, calling it the “best teaser in a long time” and celebrating what feels like a nostalgic reunion. Adding to the playful buzz, Vir Das joined in on social media, jokingly responding to a fan’s comment by pretending not to know Imran was in the movie at all.

Imran, who made a memorable debut with the 2007 hit Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, went on to star in films such as I Hate Luv Storys, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Break Ke Baad, and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara.

Despite strong fan support, he struggled to maintain consistent box-office success. His reappearance in Happy Patel has therefore stirred both nostalgia and curiosity about what the future may hold.

Starring Vir Das and Mona Singh in the lead roles, and produced under the Aamir Khan Productions banner, Happy Patel is slated for a theatrical release on 16 January 2026.
