Indian high commissioner to UK Vikram Doraiswami on Monday (20) held a meeting with members of the Indian community in the wake of vandalism of the Indian high commission building in London and the pulling down of the Tricolour on Sunday (19) to allay their fears.

The local Indian community expressed concerns over the incident which was carried out by pro-Khalistan separatist and extremist elements after the police in the northern Indian state of Punjab launched a massive manhunt to catch radical preacher Amritpal Singh.

Deputy high commissioner Sujit Ghosh was also present during Doraiswami’s meeting with the local Indians which took place at India House, the high commission wrote on Twitter.

“HC @VDoraiswamiand DHC @sujitjoyghosh interacted with concerned Indian community leaders at India House. Appreciated their solidarity following the attack on the High Commission on Sunday. @MEAIndia @IndianDiplomacy @DrSJaishankar @indiandiplomats,” the commission in London tweeted.

Authorities in India lodged a strong protest over the incident by summoning the British deputy high commissioner in India on Sunday night. An explanation was sought over the absence of security at the diplomatic premises and the British diplomat was also reminded of the fundamental responsibilities placed on the authorities in London by the Vienna Convention.

“India finds unacceptable the indifference of the UK Government to the security of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the UK,” India’s external affairs ministry said in a press release.

British high commissioner to India Alex Ellis condemned the attack on the Indian high commission, calling the acts disgraceful and totally unacceptable.

A similar attack happened at the Indian consulate in San Francisco, US, on Monday and India lodged a similar protest with a top American diplomat stationed in New Delhi.
