ACE wicket-keeper-batter KL Rahul was ignored as Indian selectors on Tuesday (30) picked the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in the West Indies and the United States in June. The deadline for announcing the squads for the tournament is May 1.

Led by Rohit Sharma, the squad saw Hardik Pandya as the vice captain while veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who recently completed 200 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the first bowler, made a comeback to the national side.

Left-hand opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was also selected as was Shivam Dube, the batting all-rounder who has exhibited good form in the ongoing IPL 2024. Among the pacers, Arshdeep Singh was picked alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Rishabh Pant, who missed cricket for more than a year after a horrific car accident in December 2022 and made a comeback to the game in this year’s IPL, was picked as one of the two wicket-keepers besides Sanju Samson.

Rohit Sharma, who turned 37 on Tuesday and has played in all the T20 World Cups since its inception in 2007 in South Africa, led India in the previous edition in Australia in 2022 but lost in the semi-final to eventual champions England by 10 wickets.

The selection meeting was held in Ahmedabad in the western state of Gujarat which was attended by Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, among others.

India, who have won the T20 World Cup only once till date, will launch their campaign at the marquee tournament against Ireland in New York on June 5. They will take on arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue four days later.

The USA and Canada are the other two teams in the pool (A) and they will play India on June 12 and 15, respectively.

Two prominent names that were missing in the squad were Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh. They were included in the reserve list along with fast bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan and could get games in case any player in the main squad gets injured.
