An Indian-American woman has reflected on the everyday comforts she came to appreciate only after spending years in India. Instagram user Tanu Priya, who lived there for 15 years, has gone viral after revealing the three household conveniences that feel like luxuries in comparison.
Waiting for hot water no more
Priya noted how she had to switch on a geyser at least 15 to 30 minutes before bathing in India, unlike in the US, where hot water is instantly available from the tap thanks to central heating systems.
Bucket baths over showers
She also spoke about missing strong shower pressure, explaining that in many Indian homes she had to rely on bucket baths. Washing her hair, she said, often meant filling two full buckets of water.
From holiday dish duty to dishwasher convenience
The third comfort she values is a dishwasher. Although her family in India employed domestic help, holiday periods meant managing the washing-up themselves — something she now avoids with the push of a button.
Viral Reel sparks wider conversation
Priya’s Reel on these “humbling experiences” has struck a chord with thousands online, feeding into a broader trend of expats comparing life in India with life abroad. Recently, an American woman in India also went viral after listing what she loves and dislikes about her adopted home, from food and hospitality to pollution and street litter.
