An Indian-origin father-son duo have achieved a unique feat by getting elected to the Hertsmere Borough Council in Hertfordshire in southern England earlier in May.

While Prabhakar Kaza was elected from the Borehamwood Kenilworth ward as a Labour and Cooperative candidate, his son Aaditya of the Labour Party emerged victorious from the Borehamwood Hillside seat. Door-knocking was key to both of their electoral success.

The senior Kaza, who worked as a banker for several years in the UK, has been Elstree & Borehamwood Town councillor since 2019. He won the latest election with a thumping majority with 1056 votes, the second highest for any candidate in the entire borough after Nik Oakley. Prabhakar aims to keep the borough clean, reduce traffic incidents and bring more investment into the district which would bring new jobs.

Aaditya, who also finished as the second highest vote getter (770) in Borehamwood Hillside after Alpha Collins, is a graduate from Westminster University in Journalism. He has a keen interest in politics and has been an active Labour Party worker over the last few years. His success in the 2023 election was special since he won in a ward which had been held by the Tories for the last 24 years and was considered unwinnable for Labour. The main plank in the election was protection of Green Belt, cutting down on crime and reduction of fly-tipping.

Other Indian-origin candidates were also elected to the council, with South Asians accounting for 4.7 per cent of the population in the borough in Hertfordshire.

Meenal Sachdev and Abhishek Sachdev – both Conservatives – won from Bentley Heath & the Royds and Potters Bar Parkfield wards, respectively, while Liberal Democrat Shailain Shah was elected from Bushey Park.

Both the father and son hope to bring a breath of fresh air into the borough and aspire to bring about long-lasting changes.
