Journey from graduation to job search

Ananya Joshi completed her master’s degree in Biotechnology at Northwestern University in 2024. She joined a biotechnology startup in the United States under the F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows international students to work in roles directly related to their field of study for up to 12 months.

After being laid off during a company-wide downsizing, Joshi began searching for a new job. Despite months of effort, she was unable to secure a position before her OPT authorization expired.

Sharing the struggle online

Joshi chronicled her journey on Instagram and LinkedIn, offering followers an honest view of the challenges international graduates face. In a LinkedIn post four months ago, she wrote:

“I’ve been laid off from my previous role as part of a company-wide downsizing. I’m not looking for my next opportunity… There’s some urgency to this as my STEM OPT clock is ticking, and I need to secure a role within the next month to remain in the US.”

A tearful farewell

On September 29, Joshi posted a video of herself leaving the United States, accompanied by a heartfelt note:

“Even though I seemed to have accepted my reality, nothing could have prepared me for this day. America was my first home as a financially independent adult and that will always be a special thing to me. Though short lived, I really appreciate the life you gave me. AMERICA, I LOVE YOU.”

Her post resonated widely, with followers leaving messages of encouragement:

“The crying is so real, I felt it too, you will be missed, stay strong and don’t forget there’s so much in the world still left to see!”
“You’re gonna thrive girlie pop! Hang in there! Keep your arms open for any possible opportunity!”

Joshi’s experience highlights the difficulties international students face in the US job market, even with advanced degrees and work authorizations. Her story underscores the emotional impact of navigating visa timelines, layoffs, and employment restrictions while also celebrating the personal growth and independence gained during her time in America.
