The age-old cooperative movement in the South Indian state of Kerala on Tuesday (17) witnessed a milestone as the country’s first five-star resort in the sector became operational, Indian daily Times of India reported.

The formal inauguration of the resort in Sultan Bathery in the state’s Wayanad district is scheduled next January.

The soft launch of the Rs 100-crore resort, Saptha Resort and Spa, also marked the entry of Kerala Land Reforms and Development Cooperative Society (Ladder) into the luxury hospitality sector.

The resort, which is spread over four acres and located close to Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, has 63 rooms, including four suit rooms, besides facilities like a convention hall that can accommodate upto 500 people, specialty restaurants, infinity pool, gaming area and mini movie theatre. The three-floor resort also has a business centre and two board rooms.

CN Vijaykrishnan, founder chairman of Ladder, said, “We forayed into the sector as tourism is the only dependable industry that Kerala can look forward to in the future. It offers the potential of marketing our nature, climate and destinations. We also want to give a message that nothing is impossible for the cooperative sector.”

He also said Kerala’s co-operative sector had been successful in making forays into sectors like education, health and agriculture and its entry would boost tourism growth and infrastructure creation.
