Actor Janhvi Kapoor made a breathtaking debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025, and her appearance on the red carpet wasn’t just about style—it was a heartfelt tribute to her late mother and legendary actress Sridevi. Wearing a stunning, rose-tinted custom creation by designer Tarun Tahiliani, Janhvi’s look channeled the grace and poise that her mother was known for.
Janhvi’s red carpet moment unfolded on Tuesday (20), ahead of the world premiere of her new film Homebound. The ethereal outfit, crafted from real tissue fabric specially woven in Benaras, bore a metallic sheen and featured intricate detailing achieved through a traditional hand-crushed technique. Adding a contemporary spin to Indian tradition, the ensemble also came with a veil that delicately covered her low bun—a style reminiscent of Sridevi’s timeless elegance.

The choice of attire struck a chord with fashion observers and fans alike. Popular fashion commentary platform Diet Sabya described her look as “Janhvi channeling mother Sri for first Cannes red carpet Lewk,” while comments poured in from followers echoing similar sentiments: “It’s giving Sridevi,” and “She reminded me of Sridevi.”
To complete her regal appearance, Janhvi paired the outfit with statement pearl jewellery, adding further to the vintage Indian glamour that Sridevi so often embodied.
Janhvi was joined on the Cannes red carpet by her Homebound co-stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, as well as director Neeraj Ghaywan and producer Karan Johar. The team marked a strong Bollywood presence at the French Riviera, capturing global attention for their project.
Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and screened in the Un Certain Regard section, tells the story of two young friends from a North Indian village whose bond is tested as they take up jobs as police officers. The film has garnered buzz not only for its powerful storytelling but also for the presence of legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese as executive producer. The movie is backed by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra, with Marijke de Souza and Melita Toscan Du Plantier onboard as co-producers.
Adding to the celebratory moment was the arrival of Janhvi’s sister Khushi Kapoor and boyfriend Shikhar Pahariya in Cannes, who were there to cheer her on during her significant international debut.
With this elegant homage to her mother and a strong cinematic offering, Janhvi Kapoor’s Cannes debut was not just a personal milestone, but a moment of cultural pride for Indian cinema.
