Liz Truss, the British foreign secretary who is in the race to become next prime minister of the country, has vowed to declassify more intelligence on Russia’s operations in Ukraine if she succeeded in emerging as the successor to outgoing premier Boris Johnson. She said she would expose Russian president Vladimir Putin’s playbook to the world.

Truss, 47, is widely predicted to win the race against Rishi Sunak to become the leader of the Conservative Party and the next premier.

She assured Ukraine that it would have “no greater ally” than Britain if she won power. She said Putin could not win with his military campaign in Ukraine which has been going on for the last six months.

She also said that the UK was among those nations that recognised the independence of Ukraine in 1991 at the earliest.

“We will continue to step up our work to counter the efforts of Russia and other authoritarian regimes to use disinformation to sow confusion and undermine global stability, drawing on the skills and tools at our disposal alongside our international partners. I will go further as prime minister by doing everything possible – including declassifying more intelligence – to expose Putin’s playbook to the world, Truss said, as per the Daily Telegraph.

The foreign secretary also said that her government would use intelligence strategically to expose the Kremlin’s attempts to “undermine and destabilise” countries that value freedom.

She called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “sharp shock of reality” for the free world and also reaffirmed her commitment to increasing the UK’s defence spending to three per cent of the country’s gross domestic product by 2030.

“If I become the prime minister, I will do everything I can to ensure the flame of freedom in Ukraine continues to burn bright. Putin cannot prevail. Under my leadership, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will have no greater ally at this dark hour than the UK,” Truss said.
