Anthem marks 15 years of LoL Esports

Riot Games has released the official anthem for the 2025 League of Legends World Championship, titled Sacrifice. Performed by G.E.M., the anthem celebrates the 15th anniversary of LoL Esports and highlights key moments and players from the game’s history.

Andres Cerro, Senior Brand Manager for LoL Esports, described the anthem as the “purest expression of hype, fandom, and love” for the community. The video includes clips of iconic plays and memorable players, underscoring the dedication required to reach the top level of professional play.

Sacrifice and the theme of legacy

The 2025 Worlds campaign revolves around the tagline “Earn Your Legacy.” The anthem’s title reflects the real-world sacrifices players make to succeed. Cerro explained that reaching Worlds requires immense dedication, with players committing time, effort, and opportunity to compete at the highest level.

Creative Director Mike Potter added that the concept of legacy extends beyond tournament victories. Players can leave their mark through gameplay, broadcasts, and memorable moments, even without lifting the Summoner’s Cup. The anthem and video aim to celebrate the broader contributions of both players and fans.

A cosmic celebration of Esports history

The Sacrifice music video reimagines iconic Worlds moments in a cosmic setting, using space as a backdrop to dramatize LoL Esports’ 15-year history. The video includes over 70 Easter eggs, ranging from famous plays to subtle nods to players, including a tribute to Maciej “Shushei” Ratuszniak, one of the first World Championship winners who passed away in April 2025.

The cosmic theme allows for creative freedom and visually represents the shared memories of the community, with constellations acting as metaphors for the lasting impact of these moments.

Designed for fans, not profit

Cerro emphasized that Worlds anthems are created for fans and not for financial return. The goal is to engage the community and celebrate their contributions to LoL Esports. Riot tracks audience reactions across platforms and languages to gauge how well the anthem and video resonate.

Perspective on criticism

Following production changes and delays, some fans have expressed criticism of the anthem. Cerro encouraged the community to consider the global scope of LoL Esports. The anthem is intended to connect with fans worldwide, from longtime supporters to newcomers, rather than catering to individual tastes.

Fifteen years after the first League of Legends World Championship, Sacrifice highlights the enduring spirit of the game and its community. The anthem reminds players and fans alike that earning a legacy in LoL requires dedication, teamwork, and sacrifice.
