Microsoft layoff to impact more than 6,000 employees

This would be Microsoft’s largest round of layoffs since the elimination of 10,000 roles in 2023, and it will affect all teams and geographies, including LinkedIn

MICROSOFT has announced that it’s laying off 3 per cent of it workforce, around 6,000 employees, as it looks to reduce the ‘layers of management’ across all teams and geographies.

This would be Microsoft’s largest round of layoffs since the elimination of 10,000 roles in 2023, and the company has specified that the current pruning is not related to performance.

While the details of impacted teams have not been made public, reports suggest that employees across various levels and departments, including LinkedIn and Microsoft’s international offices, are affected.

Washington state said on Tuesday (13) that Microsoft was reducing headcount tied to its Redmond headquarters by 1,985 people, including 1,510 working in the office and 475 remotely.

A Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC, “We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.”

Microsoft intends to reduce management layers to ensure a more direct and nimble decision-making.

It may be recalled that in January, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts that the company would make sales execution changes after the company delivered slower growth than expected in Azure cloud revenue that wasn’t tied to artificial intelligence.

The company had reported better-than-expected results, with $25.8 billion in quarterly net income, and an upbeat forecast in late April.

Amazon had announced in January that it was getting rid of some employees after noticing “unnecessary layers” in its organization.
