Two months after income-tax raids, the BBC in India has faced yet another probe, this time over alleged foreign exchange violations.

NDTV cited sources as saying that India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) was scrutinising the broadcaster’s foreign remittances. The BBC in India has been asked to produce financial details in connection to the probe.

The ED has registered a case against BBC India under the Foreign Exchange Management Act.

The economic crime-probe agency has reportedly asked the media organisation to furnish its books of accounts and financial statements.

In February, India’s income tax officials surveyed the BBC’s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai over allegations of irregularities in taxes, diversion of profits and non-compliance with rules.

Senior employees of the BBC had to stay in the office overnight to respond to queries during the survey.

The move came weeks after the BBC released a documentary series critical of prime minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in the western state of Gujarat during the 2002 riots.

The Modi government slammed the broadcaster calling the documentary propaganda.

The income-tax survey against the BBC was slammed by the opposition in India which said it was an attack on the freedom of press.
