Teaser ignites backlash

The trailer for Prabhutva Sarai Dukanam, directed by National Award winner Narasimha Nandi, unleashed a wave of protest soon after its release. Activists from multiple women’s associations in Telangana argue that certain lines and scenes in the teaser demean women and misrepresent the Telangana dialect.

Representatives from groups including Mahila Samaikhya submitted a written complaint to Damodara Prasad, General Secretary of the Telugu Film Chamber, demanding an immediate halt to the film’s release.

What the activists say

“Vulgar dialogue, misrepresentation”
Deepa Devi, on behalf of Mahila Samaikhya, condemned the dialogues in the teaser, saying:

“The teaser … contains vulgar and insulting dialogues against women, spoken in the Telangana dialect. It misrepresents how Telangana women speak and degrades our culture.”

She further warned:

“If the movie is released, we will protest and even lay siege to the Censor Board office.”

Declining cinematic responsibility
Another activist, Neeraja, voiced frustration over entertainment standards:

“In the name of entertainment, such content insults Telangana’s identity and sends a wrong message to youth. We will not allow this film to be screened.”

Defending Telangana women’s dignity, Dhanamma added:

“Telangana women are known for their dignity and values. The language used in this film is obscene. We demand that the film be stopped immediately, or we will intensify our protest.”

The delegation included Deepa Devi, Padma, Neeraja, Dhanamma, Chandramma, and Naseema.

Film details and credibility at stake

The film is produced by Daiva Naresh Gowda and Parigi Sravanthi Mallik, under SVS Productions and Sreenidhi Cinemas.

Narasimha Nandi’s filmography includes socially conscious works; his debut film, 1940's Lo Oka Gramam, won a National Award. Yet, his newer projects have previously courted controversy, and Prabhutva Sarai Dukanam now adds to that record.

Silence from the makers, tension in the air

Despite pressure from activists and media attention, Nandi and the film’s producers have not issued any public statements addressing the objections.

With protests threatened and reputations at stake, the controversy may influence whether the film clears its path to release. Some critics argue that the debate over Prabhutva Sarai Dukanam reflects broader tensions around regional identity, gender representation, and the boundaries of artistic freedom.
