Odisha train crash: India railway minister says cause identified, will be revealed soon

The accident happened when one passenger train rammed into derailed coaches of another train that jumped the tracks after hitting a goods train, resulting in deaths of 288 people.

Indian railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday (4) said the cause of the deadly three-train crash that took place in Balasore in the eastern state of Odisha on Friday (2) has been identified and will be revealed in a report soon.

The crash, one of the deadliest in the history of Indian Railways, saw deaths of 288 people while more than 1,000 were injured. Prime minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (3) paid a visit to the site of the accident and hospitals where the injured are being treated.

Speaking to Asian News International, Vaishnaw, who is a parliamentarian from Odisha and visited the site of the accident on Friday night, said railway tracks damaged by the accident are expected to be restored by Sunday, following his review of the repair work.

The accident happened when one passenger train rammed into derailed coaches of another train that jumped the tracks after hitting a goods train near Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Balasore district.

“The root cause of this accident has been identified. PM Modi inspected the site yesterday. We will try to restore the track today. All bodies have been removed. Our target is to finish the restoration work by Wednesday morning so that trains can start running on this track,” Vaishnaw, who set up a high-profile panel to probe the accident, said.
