OpenAI is reportedly developing a new code-hosting platform that could compete directly with GitHub, according to a report published Tuesday (3) by The Information.
The report, citing a person familiar with the matter, said the initiative is still in its early stages and may take several months to complete. If launched, the platform would position OpenAI as a direct competitor to GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI.
According to the report, OpenAI engineers experienced a rise in service disruptions in recent months that temporarily made GitHub unavailable. These outages allegedly prompted internal discussions about building an alternative code repository platform to ensure greater reliability and control over development workflows.
The new product is still under development, and key details, including its final features and pricing model, have not been finalized. However, employees working on the initiative have reportedly discussed making the repository available for purchase to OpenAI’s enterprise customers. Such a move could expand OpenAI’s commercial offerings beyond artificial intelligence tools into developer infrastructure.
