Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan is known for his rare public appearances to promote his films, often avoiding media interaction and social media promotion altogether. This makes his recent press conference in Hyderabad to promote his upcoming film Hari Hara Veera Mallu (HHVM) a notable event. Speaking candidly, Pawan assured fans and media that his decision to promote this film is “not because of arrogance,” addressing long-standing perceptions about his reserved public persona.
Why Pawan Kalyan avoids film promotion
During the event, Pawan opened up about his usual reluctance to promote his movies. He said, "it feels a little odd to talk without a podium. I can’t remember the last time I promoted a film with the press. I feel shy about beating my own drum and talking about my films.”
He admitted that his silence was never meant to project arrogance or indifference. Rather, he simply doesn’t know what to say when it comes to self-promotion. For Hari Hara Veera Mallu, however, he made an exception “for (producer) AM Rathnam garu.”
An ‘accidental actor’ who was deemed unsellable
Pawan reflected on his early career struggles, recounting how producers and media once saw him as “unsellable.” He shared a poignant memory about being asked to dance on a bus in his debut film Suswaghatam, which made him feel uncomfortable and caused him to consider quitting acting.
He revealed, "when I began my career, magazines wouldn’t even publish my photos. So, I got used to not taking part in publicity for my films.” This history explains why Pawan developed a habit of shying away from media promotion, even as his star power grew.
Candid about his industry position and personality
Pawan also spoke openly about how, despite being a well-known politician and a familiar face nationwide, he believes he doesn’t match his peers in the film industry when it comes to publicity or media engagement. He described himself as not very talkative except when it comes to politics.
He stated plainly, "if a film is good, you don’t need to talk about it. If it’s bad, you don’t need to do it anyway.” This philosophy underpins his minimal promotion style.
