Venkatesh was sworn in as mayor on December 8 after receiving a unanimous vote from the San Carlos City Council. Venkatesh was born in Fiji to Indian parents and moved to the US with her family at the age of four. She was largely raised in California and has strong ties to both her Indian roots and the local American community. She has lived in San Carlos since 2009 and is a well-known figure in the community.
Her professional background is diverse. Venkatesh holds a Bachelor's degree from Notre Dame de Namur University and a Master's degree in Early Childhood and Clinical Psychology. Earlier in her career, she worked as a child psychologist in East Palo Alto, supporting families and children in undeserved communities. She also gained private-sector experience as a buyer at Macy's.
In addition to her public service work, Venkatesg is a small business owner. She runs a Montessori preschool in San Carlos, giving her firsthand experience with the challenges faced by working families, educators, and local businesses.
Venkatesh entered local politics after serving for three years on the San Carlos Economic Development Advisory Commission. In that role, she worked on issues such as small business support, local economic growth, and long-term planning. In 2022, she was elected to the San Carlos City Council with the endorsement of the San Mateo Democratic Party.
As mayor, Venkatesh has outlined clear priorities. She has said her focus will be on public safety, childcare, economic stability, infrastructure improvement, and affordable housing. She has emphasized the importance of balancing community needs with effective and practical city governance.
In her public remarks after being sworn in, Venkatesh spoke about inclusion and respect for diversity. She highlighted San Carlos’s multicultural population and said it is important to honor one’s own heritage while respecting others and recognizing the positive impact of different cultures.
Her election has drawn strong support from Indian-American and Indo-Fijian communities across the US. The Fiji Trade Commission in North America praised her win as a sign of how diaspora communities can play a meaningful role in American civic life.
Venkatesh’s victory comes shortly after Zohran Mamdani’s historic win as mayor of New York City. Together, their successes reflect the growing visibility and influence of Indian-origin leaders in US politics, from major global cities to local governments near Silicon Valley.
