AFTER intense political speculation, prime minister Narendra Modi finally got an invite to the G7 Summit to be held on June 15-17 in Canada.
Modi on Friday thanked Canadian prime minister Mark Carney for the invite in a telephone call he received from the latter.
The prime minister said on X, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.”
The G7 is a grouping of seven richest countries, and includes the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Japan besides Canada.
India has been getting an invitation to attend the prestigious Summit since 2019, and a delay in invitation had evoked speculation that it might not come.
India’s ties with Canada turned frosty under Carney’s predecessor Justin Trudeau over a host of issues, including the activities of Khalistani separatists in the country.
Trudeau had alleged that the Indian government was involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a radical Khalistani activist.
Canada is home to the largest Sikh community outside of India.
The diplomatic ties between the two countries were downgraded as the diplomatic row between them escalated.
The expected meeting between Modi and Carney, the new leader of the ruling Liberal Party following Trudeau’s resignation, has raised the hope of a thaw.
Foreign minister S Jaishankar recently had a phone call with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, on May 25.
This was the highest diplomatic contact between Ottawa and New Delhi since Carney became prime minister in March.
