The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s summer-time T20 cricket show, is set to kick off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday (31) when defending champions Gujarat Titans will take on four-time winners Chennai Super Kings.

While this year’s edition will see the old home-and-away format returning with all the 10 participating franchises set to host matches at their home grounds, some new rules are also getting added which are expected to make the marquee tournament more exciting.

Naming playing XIs after toss: Unlike in the past when captains of two playing teams submitted names of their playing XI to the match referee before the toss, IPL 2023 will see the teams declaring their playing XIs after the toss gets over.

Impact player: The latest edition will see the teams being permitted to substitute a player in their respective playing XI at any point during the game. The substitute player will be able to bat, bowl and field but not lead the team as captain.

Penalty rule for slow over rates: Fielding teams will have to be extra careful in this edition of IPL. They will have to complete bowling 20 overs within 90 minutes and it goes beyond that, they will have fewer fielders outside the 30-yard circle till they make up for the lost time.

Use of DRS for wide and no balls: In this IPL, the players will be allowed to review deliveries that have been called wide or no by the on-field umpires.

Unfair movement by wicket-keepers: Wicket-keepers can now be handed a penalty for making ‘unfair movements’ behind the stumps. If he is found shuffling before the batter strikes the ball, it would be considered unfair.
