In what is believed to be a tit-for-tat move after the Indian high commission in London came under attack from pro-Khalistan supporters who also pulled down the Tricolour, barricades outside the British high commission in Delhi were removed by the local police on Wednesday (22).

The police said that the security outside the UK mission was intact.

“The security arrangements outside the British High Commission here are intact. However, barricades placed on the pathway towards the Commission that created hurdles for commutation have been removed,” the Press Trust of India quoted a senior police officer as saying.

The incident at the Indian high commission happened on Sunday (19) after the police in the northern Indian state of Punjab launched a manhunt for separatist leader Amritpal Singh who escaped. A window was also smashed at the mission and one person was arrested.

The act was condemned in both India and the UK. Visuals of a Khalistani supporter pulling down the Indian national flag triggered an outrage on social media. On Monday (20), members of the Sikh community staged a protest outside the British high commission in Delhi.

The Indian government summoned the British deputy high commissioner late on Sunday to lodge a strong protest and also sought an explanation over the lack of security at the Indian mission.

Top British officials have said that the UK government will take the security of the Indian mission “seriously”, as they condemned the attack as “disgraceful” and “completely unacceptable”.
