WINNING a medal at the Olympics is not just about statistics. It is also about human emotions and sometimes, even relations.

The mega show at Tokyo just presented an example.

A woman was left with tons of regret after her former boyfriend won a bronze medal in the triathlon at the ongoing Games and she publicly said “I regret breaking up with you!”

It happened after New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde, 23, won the bronze in his event on Monday (26) – his country’s first medal at the games.

New Zealand’s local broadcaster 1News interviewed fans in Wilde’s hometown Whakatane in the country’s Bay of Plenty region where the medallist’s ex-girlfriend was also present. When the broadcaster asked her what message she would send to the Kiwi athlete after his historic fear, she clearly said that she rued the fact that they parted ways.

While it was reported that the two were unlikely to reunite, Wilde’s former partner was still extremely proud of him.

“I’m so proud of Hayden, all the work he’s obviously done to get there is amazing. I went to primary school with him and he’s grown so much and I’m real proud,” she said.

Wilde was also asked by the same broadcaster about his plans post winning the Olympic medal and he said he would be speaking to his current girlfriend, who he said is in Spain and got up early to watch him compete in another part of the world.
