AT least six people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park in the American state of Illinois on Monday (4). More than two dozen were injured in the attack and were undergoing treatment in local hospitals, officials said.
Some of the victims, who included a child, were critically injured when they were shifted from the scene of shooting, Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage told the media.
One person, identified as Robert “Bobby” Crimo III, was arrested around 6.30 pm, nearly nine hours after the tragedy. According to the officials, his vehicle was stopped after a brief chase. He was taken to the Highland Park Police headquarters as part of the investigation, CBS News reported.
“This individual is believed to have been responsible for what happened,” Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Chris Covelli said.
Police and witnesses said earlier in the day that it appeared the gunman was shooting at people from the terrace of a business near the parade route.
While the investigators said a firearm had been recovered from the spot, Covelli called it a “high-powered rifle”, CBS News added.
Hours after the incident, heavily armed law-enforcement officials were seen at what is believed to be Crimo’s family residence in Highwood, just north of Highland Park, CBS Chicago reported.
Neighbours told the channel that the accused resides at the home with his father and uncle.
CBS Chicago digital producer Elyssa Kaufman, who was watching the parade with her family, heard gunshot sound.
“Everyone was was running, hiding and screaming,” Kaufman said. “It was extremely terrifying. It was very scary. We are very fortunate, we got out very quickly.”
US president Joe Biden tweeted about the incident expressing his shock and said he would not give up his fight against the “epidemic of gun violence”.
Jill and I are shocked by the senseless gun violence that has yet again brought grief to an American community this Independence Day. As always, we are grateful for the first responders and law enforcement on the scene.
I will not give up fighting the epidemic of gun violence.
