SEVERAL posts that have been circulating across social media and WhatsApp containing incorrect information about the change in the law about organ donation have resulted in big spikes in opt-outs, said the NHS Blood and Transplant.
These messages, which claim that all residents in the UK are now automatically on the organ donation register, are being circulated widely within black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.
The NHS Blood and Transplant wants people to be wary of such messages.
Organ donation remains a choice and families will still be involved, said the NHS Blood and Transplant.
"While it is absolutely an individual’s choice whether or not they want to register as an organ donor or opt out, we want to ensure that people are making the right decision for them and their family based on facts rather than misinformation or scaremongering," it said.
