Fastest animated film to reach the $1 billion mark

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia 2 crosses the $1 billion milestone at the global box office just 17 days after release. The film earns $986.1 million worldwide so far, with $232.7 million coming from North America and $753.4 million from international markets. It becomes the second Motion Picture Association title of 2025 to join the billion-dollar club, following Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, and reaches the mark faster than any previous animated MPA or PG-rated release.

A first for Disney Animation

The success of Zootopia 2 delivers a historic first for Walt Disney Animation Studios, marking its first consecutive billion-dollar releases after last year’s Moana 2. Since 2013, the studio now counts five films that have crossed the $1 billion threshold worldwide: Frozen, Frozen 2, Moana 2, Zootopia, and Zootopia 2.

Strong critical response and record-breaking opening

The film opens on November 26 with a global haul of $559.5 million in its first five days, setting records as the highest global animated opening of all time, the biggest worldwide debut of 2025, and the largest opening for an animated film in Disney history. Audience response remains strong, with a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore. Zootopia 2 also ranks as the top international MPA release of the year to date.

Unprecedented performance in China

China emerges as a major driver of the sequel’s global success. Zootopia 2 posts the highest opening ever for a non-local animated film in the market, collecting $272 million, and becomes the highest-grossing non-local animated title of all time within just five days. With an estimated $447 million earned so far, it now stands as the second-highest-grossing MPA release in China, trailing only Avengers: Endgame. The Walt Disney Studios currently holds three of the five highest-grossing MPA titles ever released in the country.

Franchise interest surges beyond theaters

As the sequel continues its theatrical run, interest in the wider Zootopia franchise also climbs. Viewership of Zootopia and Zootopia+ on Disney+ reaches more than 725 million hours globally, reflecting renewed audience engagement alongside the film’s box office momentum.
